“To keep the body in good health is a duty…otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” -Buddha
With the motivational buzz of the new year wearing off, and resolutions no longer fresh in our minds, many of us may be finding ourselves in a rut. We are easily caught up in the business of daily life, forgetting the importance of why we made those new year resolutions in the first place. If you’re anything like me, when life gets tough my self care resolutions tend to be the first thing to fall by the wayside.
I am a firm believer that exercise and nutrition play a large role in how we feel both physically and emotionally. Our thoughts and feelings become our reality and therefore, it is of the utmost importance that we make healthy choices, choices that help promote a positive lifestyle.
It has been my experience that when I am conscious of what I eat, and make exercise a priority, that I am a completely different person compared to when I let myself go. It only takes a few days of unhealthy habits for me to notice a change within my body and thought process. My levels of energy decrease, my stress levels increase, I become more irritable and my ability to stay positive begins to dissipate.
I am sure that many have and continue to endure this emotional and physical rollercoaster while trying to make self care a priority. The obvious connection between mental health, exercise and nutrition has led me to realize the importance in creating healthy habits. More specifically, healthy habits that increase the likelihood of achieving personal successes while allowing us to lead a more mindful and peaceful way of life.
Everyone is different and therefore, everyone is approaching their self care journey from different vantage points. One thing however remains the same – the first step in creating change starts with you – you are the only one who can make the choice to do better … to be better.
I do admit that it won’t always be easy, especially when life gets tough; but by choosing to make self care a priority you will begin to a shift your mindset, experiencing life in a way that you never dreamed possible.
At the end of the day the decision to make a change can be scary; especially if you’ve never pushed yourself to step outside the comfort of your current state. However, it is important to remember that in pushing yourself to work harder, you open the door to a strong sense of self and inner peace – both of which will take hold and radiate throughout your mind and body.
So don’t waste another moment. Revisit those self care resolutions, make the plan, set your goals, and start investing in yourself.
Cheers!
Definitely needed this reminder! Thanks.
